Default Law Blog Law Professor of the Day: UCLA’s Pavel Wonsowicz

Midway through my first semester of law school, my civil procedure professor threw us a midterm exam. He told us, if memory serves, that he was doing us a favor. He said it wouldn’t count much toward our final grade for the class, and that it would help get us used to law school exams.

The University of California, Los Angeles (generally known as UCLA) is a public research university located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, in the United States. It is regarded as one of the best public universities in world.

It was founded in 1919 and is the second oldest of the ten major campuses affiliated with the University of California system. UCLA offers over 300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines and enrolls about 26,000 undergraduate and about 11,000 graduate students from the United States and around the world every year. It is the only leading research institution in the world founded in the 20th century.

Rankings

Global Rankings

UCLA was ranked 12th in Newsweek's annual ranking of the Top 100 Global universities. In 2007, UCLA was ranked 13th in the world (11th in North America) by Top 500 World Universities, an annual list published by the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. UCLA was ranked 18th in the country and 30th in the world by The Times Higher Education Supplement’s list of the top 200 universities in the world.

U.S. Rankings

U.S. News & World Report ranked UCLA as the 2nd best public university among "National Universities" in the United States and 24th among "America's Best Colleges 2010: National Universities". In the August 21–28, 2006 issue of Newsweek (also released as the 2007 issue of the Kaplan Guide to Colleges), UCLA was listed as one of "25 New Ivies". The Washington Monthly ranks UCLA third nationally with criteria based on research, community service, and social mobility.

UCLA took the second spot among all universities (surpassed only by Johns Hopkins University), and the top spot among public universities, for research spending in the sciences and engineering during the fiscal year 2004, according to a 2006 report by the National Science Foundation—UCLA spent $773 million.

Graduate Schools

UCLA's School of Law, Anderson School of Management, School of Public Affairs, and School of Medicine consistently rank among the top ten in the United States. UCLA's oldest operating unit, the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS), was ranked second among American graduate schools of education in the 2006 edition of U.S. News and World Report, America's Best Graduate Schools.

Default Pavel Wonsowicz: Biography

Pavel Wonsowicz is the Director of UCLA School of Law’s Academic Support Program and teaches Evidence and Constitutional Law I. Through a comprehensive network of presentations, tutorials, and workshops designed to stimulate learning and amplify the classroom experience, the Academic Support Program enhances students’ learning skills and develops more efficient methods of studying, comprehending, and writing in the law school environment. Currently, Professor Wonsowicz is the Chair of the American Association of Law Schools’ Academic Support Section and lectures nationally on bar exam-related topics.
Professor Wonsowicz previously taught at UNLV’s Boyd School of Law and Vermont Law School, where he won the Student Bar Association’s Professor of the Year Award at both schools. He has also taught trial advocacy at Boston University School of Law and practiced law in Boston, Massachusetts, as a trial attorney specializing in toxic tort and products liability cases.

His research interests focus on evidence law, products liability, legal education, and the bar exam.
