What's New

Quote:
Mary Beth Matthews, the Sidney Parker Davis, Jr. Professor of Business & Commercial Law, recently released her new book, Payments Law and Commercial Paper, co-written with her former teacher, Steve H. Nickles of Wake Forest University School of Law. The volume covers topics including paying in cash, issues related to checks, credit cards, commercial and consumer funds transfers, and digital money. “[N]ew kinds of technology have increased the range of payment products and services,” said the authors and the book addresses these new developments. Matthews and Nickles also have collaborated on an accompanying nutshell and black letter outline.
Nickles and Matthews' Payments Law and Commercial Paper: Learning and Teaching Materials (American Casebook Series®) By Steve H. Nickles, Mary Beth Matthews

Description

This text provides thorough coverage of the still-dominant traditional payment systems and the non-paper payment systems that will dominate in the future. The authors' integration of text, cases, and problems allows teachers to arrange and bundle the materials to suit their particular teaching style. Increasingly, payments law is practically important, legally complex, and intellectually rich. This book is designed to make the subject more accessible, in all these respects, for students learning payments law and professors teaching it.

The Facts

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville is a rather large, public institution located in the appropriately titled town of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 14,000 students. The university’s School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 474 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is quite rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its strong clinic program, as well as for its emphasis on practical legal skills. The school offers degrees in the 1 year LLM in agricultural law, the 3 year JD, as well as combined degrees in the 3.5 year JD/MBA, the 3 year JD/MPA, as well as the 1.5 year LLM/MS. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of agricultural law, civil procedure, as well as criminal law.

Admission to the University of Arkansas Fayetteville’s School of Law is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 1,282 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 330 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 162 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 150 to 159, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.4. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.
