Default School of Law

John F. Kennedy University School of Law offers a four-year, part-time Juris Doctor. Beginning in Fall 2007, the law school will also offer a California Bar approved full-time program. The school is approved by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California, but does not have or currently seek American Bar Association accreditation.

The school maintains a law library of approximately 35,000 volumes and 1,600 periodicals, substantially larger than at most Committee of Bar Examiners-accredited schools. The library is frequently used by members of the surrounding legal community.

The Law School runs the JFKU Elder Law Clinic. The clinic, opened in September 2005, provides the elderly with free legal assistance to deal with financial abuse or exploitation. The school regularly sponsors educational events open to the public. Recent events have included a panel on domestic surveillance and presidential war powers; a discussion with The Honorable Thelton Henderson and screening of his biography, and a panel discussion on the constitutionality of the California High School Exit Exam.

The School of Law and the law student editorial staff publish the John F. Kennedy University Law Review.

Law Program

John F. Kennedy University School of Law offers two options leading to the Juris Doctor (JD) - a three-year full-time program and a four-year part-time program - at our Pleasant Hill and Berkeley campuses.

The School of Law seeks to graduate well-rounded practitioners who are aware of the complex issues involved in legal cases, prepared for success on the bar examination, and ready to provide competent and caring representation to their clients. To that end, we offer courses that include every subject tested on the California Bar Examination, plus a variety of writing courses, electives and practical skills training classes. In addition, each student is required to participate in hands-on trial and appellate advocacy training, which provide direct knowledge and experience in what takes place in the courtroom.
