Larry H Layton School of Law reports that on January 9, 1997 the school received STATE APPROVAL to award the Bachelor of Science in Law (BSL) degree for paralegals, legal assistants and legal secretaries.

The purpose of the new degree program is to prepare persons wanting to enter the legal field, without becoming an attorney, to receive training toward that goal. The degree that will be given to those completing the program will be a Bachelor of Science in Law (BSL).

The completion of the BSL. will not permit those receiving the degree to sit for the California Bar Examination However, the program will be structured so that the first year can be applied to a Juris Doctorate (J.D), and toward sitting for the California Bar examination if the student met certain Conditions.

Therefore, the decision to finish law school and sit for the bar examination or to merely become a paralegal can be made during or at the end of the first year of studies.

The second year of BSL studies will not be applicable to a JD and can not be used to prepare for the bar examination. The first year of BSL studies will involve studying contract law, criminal law and torts (personal injury, fraud, defamation type cases). The second year of BSL studies will consist of courses more applicable to being a paralegal including the practical training with the emphasis on "how to do it". Courses will include pleading, wills, trusts, probate, family law, community property, law office management, ethics, corporate issues, bankruptcy, employment law and workers' compensation.

The program requires 450 Classroom hours per year for two calendar years. That is 90 quarter units with a typical year being four ten week quarters going to classes approximately 9 to 12 hours per week.

To enter the paralegal program the student must have completed his or her college general education at another school such as Antelope Valley College. An AA or AS degree is required to enter the paralegal program. The graduate receives a Bachelor of Science in Law (BSL) degree as opposed to a mere paralegal certificate.

Those interested in enrolling, teaching or otherwise being involved in the paralegal program should call Dean Larry Layton at 661-269-5291 or fax 661-269-5292 or E-Mail laytonlaw@qnet.com.
