Widener University School of Law is the ABA accredited law school of Widener University. The school, founded in 1971 as the Delaware Law School, operates on two of Widener's campuses, one in Wilmington, Delaware, and the other in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Originally founded in 1971 as the Delaware Law School, the institution became affiliated with Widener University in 1975 and graduated its first class of 267 that year. The school's name was officially changed to Widener University School of Law in 1989 when the Harrisburg campus was added.

Study abroad

Study abroad is offered through the Summer International Law Institute. There are four institutes available to students; Kenya, Switzerland, Italy, and Australia. While abroad students sometimes have the ability to go out on internships with international organizations.

Degrees

Juris Doctor degrees are available through both the Delaware and Harrisburg campuses either full time or part time. Also available are specialty degrees varying per location. Available at the Delaware campus is the JD/MBA in Law and Business Administration and the J.D./Psy.D. in Law and Psychology. The Harrisburg campus has the J.D./M.S.L.S. program that allows students the opportunity to get both a Juris Doctor degree and a Masters in Library Science through a partnership with Clarion University. Graduate degrees via the Delaware campus include Master of Laws in Corporate Law and Finance (LL.M.), Master of Laws in Health Law (LL.M.), Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.), Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law (M.J.), Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.), and Doctor of Laws (D.L.). The graduate Health Law program has been ranked by the 2009 U.S. News & World report as one of the top ten graduate school programs in the nation.

Legal Information Center (LIC)

The Legal Information Center (LIC) is the major law library in the state of Delaware and is recognized as one of the major law libraries in the region. The LIC's staff is committed to offering personalized attention, delivering outstanding service, and providing ongoing education through legal and related library training programs. Widener's Law Library is continually expanding its extensive paper, microform, and electronic holdings at both the Delaware and Harrisburg locations.

Paralegal and Legal Nurse Consultant Programs

A legal assistant or paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training, or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.

LEI @ Widener Law Center offers Paralegal and Legal Nurse Consultant Programs approved by the American Bar Association . LEI is affiliated with Widener University School of Law and is located on the Delaware campus. LEI students have acess to the vast resources of the Widener Law Library.

The primary goal of the Legal Education Institute is the education of qualified individuals in the theory and philosophy of law and ethical responsibility under the supervision of attorneys.

Academic Opportunities

If you are interested in law, a career as a paralegal, or as an Legal Nurse Consultant, you can take up to three legal courses without matriculating. Non-matriculation allows students to complete courses that are specific to their personal and professional needs without working toward a degree. Courses topically include Family Law, Real Estate Title Search, Introduction to Legal Nurse Consulting, and Legal Research.

Pursue either a Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies simultaneously with an ABA approved Paralegal Certificate or an Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies simultaneously with an ABA approved Paralegal Certificate. Pursue an ABA approved Certificate of Completion in Paralegal Studies in either General Paralegal Studies with an Accelerated Summer Certificate Program or concentrations in the legal areas of Corporate law, Criminal Law, Estate Administration, Health Law, Litigation, or Real Estate Law.



LEI @ Widener Law Center offers a Legal Nurse Consultant Certificate program (LNC) that is open to applicants who have a current Registered Nurse license and either a Diploma in Nursing, Associate of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or Masters Degree in Nursing. RNs may also purse a Legal Nurse Consultant Certificate of Completion with Concentration on Forensic Nursing.

LEI @ Widener Law Center also offers a number of other unique legal academic programs and opportunities including continuing education credits and seminars and events designed to keep applicants current with their professional requirements.
