The University of Miami School of Law, founded in 1926, is the law school of the University of Miami, located in Coral Gables, Florida, in the United States. The school graduated its first class of 13 students in 1929. The school provides all of the advantages of being on the doorstep of vibrant legal and business communities while also offering a location on the beautiful main campus of the University in Coral Gables, an area acclaimed for its lush foliage and elegant Mediterranean style.

Quote:
UM Law attracts and prepares talented, successful students for rewarding careers in a wide range of fields—including corporate, international, and intellectual property law. In every aspect of the School, students benefit from diversity:
  • in our wide array of clinical programs and learning opportunities
  • with our 1,300 students who come from every background and have endless interests, reflected in our student organizations
  • with our faculty, who are experts across many fields
  • and, perhaps most of all, in the cultural diversity of our location in Southern Florida—an incomparable setting for students to prepare for practice anywhere in the country.

Financial Aid

The Law School Financial Aid Office seeks to provide students the financial aid necessary to complete their legal education. Approximately 75% of our students receive some form of need-based financial aid.

The majority of financial aid awarded by the Law School Financial Aid Office includes federal student loans and other campus-based awards such as work-study.

Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply for federal student aid funds through our office. University policy requires foreign students to demonstrate ability to pay their expenses. Foreign students should be aware that education in the United States is expensive, and are therefore encouraged to seek financial assistance and/or scholarship funds from home country sources. For assistance in locating sponsoring organizations contact the United States Embassy or Consulate or the United States Information Agency in your country.

Academics

From 1948 to 2002, the law school had an evening division for part-time students. Starting in 1952, the school started offering an LL.M. degree in taxation. In 1957, UM began to offer an LL.M. in Inter-American Law, and the Masters of Comparative Law (now an LL.M.) was first offered in 1959. In 1998, the school decided to reduce the size of its entering JD classes by 15 percent.

In 2002, the school established the "Leonard and Jayne Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy" (Abess Center) with the mission to bridge the gap that separates science from environmental policy and law, through innovative, inter-disciplinary initiatives.

The University of Miami School of Law also offers extensive "Public Interest Programs" and opportunities, including the "Center for Ethics and Public Service" that offers in-house clinics and educational programs including the "Children and Youth Law Clinic", "Health and Elder Law Clinic", and "Corporate & Professional Responsibility Program". The HOPE Public Interest Resource Center at the University of Miami School of Law gives students the opportunity to get involved in over 25 different projects each year, reaching various underserved and at-risk populations locally, nationally, and abroad.

The school also offers three official joint degree programs (in business, public health and marine affairs) and seven LL.M. programs for post-graduate-level law study. The "Academic Achievement Program" and the "James Weldon Johnson/Robert H. Waters Program" provide participating students additional tools to succeed in law school. Other special programs at the law school include four "Summer Abroad Programs", one each in London, England and Spain and two involving multiple European nations (Greece, Italy, and London) and (Greece, Italy, and Barcelona, Spain).

The University of Miami School of Law is the host of the annual "Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning," a conference for estate planning professionals. The law school also hosts an annual symposium for psychology, public policy, and law.
