THE BIELEFELD TWO-YEAR CERTIFICATE COURSE: INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LAW

The Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies offer a four-semester certificate course consisting of lectures on English law combined with language classes. The two-hour weekly lecture is given by a British lawyer; the two-hour language class by a native speaker of English.

The course was designed in view of the growing need for lawyers to be familiar with the legal systems of European Union member states, and to be able to communicate on a professional basis with their colleagues in these countries. It will give you an overview of the legal system of England and Wales in those areas likely to be relevant for your future professional activities.

The topics for the four semesters are:
  • The legal system in England and Wales
  • The law of contract and of torts
  • Commercial law
  • The impact of European Union law on Britain

The language classes will be based on the topics of the lectures. They will help you to obtain a working knowledge of legal English which should facilitate further on-the-job specialisation. They will give you practice in listening to and understanding different kinds of spoken English, and will train you in the reading, writing and speaking skills you will need to be able to cooperate with British lawyers and people in business.

The course is for students of law who have had approximately nine years of English at school, and who have been reading law for two to three semesters at university. Attendance at lectures and language classes is obligatory. You must take and pass a test of your ability to understand spoken English, which is offered at the end of each winter semester; should you fail the test, you may take it again the following year.

The final examination consists of written questions on legal topics dealt with during the course (2 hours); a translation into English (1 hour); and an oral examination of 30 minutes done in groups of 4.

Bielefeld University

Bielefeld University (German: Universität Bielefeld) is a university in Bielefeld, Germany. Founded in 1969, it is one of the country's newer universities, and considers itself a "reform" university, following a different style of organization and teaching than the established universities. In particular, the university aims to "re-establish the unity between research and teaching", and so all its faculty teach courses in their area of research. The university also stresses a focus on interdisciplinary research, helped by the architecture, which encloses all faculties in one great structure.

It is among the first of the German universities to completely switch some faculties (e.g. biology) to Bachelor/Master-degrees as part of the Bologna process.

Bielefeld University combines classical academic tradition with innovative research and teaching. It was founded as a new type of university in 1969 with the aims of re-establishing the unity between research and teaching advocated by Humboldt, and of opening up the frontiers between the disciplines. The university has succeeded in maintaining and developing essential elements of this reform concept despite a considerable increase in student numbers. Bielefeld University has attained an outstanding position among national and international academic institutions on the strength of its research achievements and unique courses of studies, its technology transfer and further education programmes.

Faculties

While Bielefeld University offers many options to study, it is known for its faculty of sociology, the only one in Germany. It is associated with Norbert Elias and Niklas Luhmann, who were professors there. The faculty of history launched the "Bielefeld School" of Social History under Hans-Ulrich Wehler, while the Laborschule and Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) are projects of the faculty of educational science.
