The University of Jena - An Overview
Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (FSU) is located in Jena, Thuringia in Germany and was renamed for the German writer Friedrich Schiller in 1934. As of 2008, the university has around 20,800 students enrolled and 340 professors. Its current rector, Klaus Dicke, is the 317th rector in the history of the university. The Friedrich Schiller University is one of Germany's fastest growing universities. Despite the fact that the number of students has quadrupled since 1989,the university, now hosting 20,000 students, is not overcrowded. More than 2000 lecturers and researchers, 335 of whom are professors, ensure quality teaching and training commensurate with a classic university. In addition, more than800 scientists and technical staff work on research projects financed by outside sponsors. The 10 FacultiesAt present the FSU is comprised of 10 faculties (Fakultäten, schools). The faculty brings together high quality education (undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level) and research (basic and applied research). It consists of several departments (Institute) and chairs (Lehrstühle). Faculty of Law The educating of lawyers has been one of the university’s most important duties since 1558, when Kaiser Ferdinand I. declared the “Hohe Schule” of Jena a university. The application of Roman law created a need for law graduates in courts, offices, government institutions, and for mediating disagreements between citizens over civil and business affairs.
