Default Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong

The Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong is the first law school in Hong Kong and one of the most prestigious law schools internationally. First established in 1972 as a Department of Law in the Faculty of Social Sciences, it became a School of Law with an autonomous Board of Studies in 1978, and a Faculty of Law on 1 July 1984. Today, the Faculty has over 60 full time academic staff from about 17 jurisdictions; and 1,500 students. It has 2 Departments, the Department of Law and the Department of Professional Legal Education, and 4 research centres. The Faculty offers a 4-year LLB programme, 3 double-degree programmes, a professional qualification programme, and a variety of taught master programmes focusing on human rights, Chinese law, corporate and financial law, information technology and intellectual property, and arbitration. It also offers various research postgraduate programmes, including MPhil, PhD and SJD.

Quote:
The Faculty believes in quality research and liberal education. Our programmes emphasize quality teaching, student-based learning, interactive participation and international exposure. Students are encouraged to participate in its various international mooting programmes and exchange programmes. Six members of the Faculty have been conferred the honour of Teaching Fellows by the University, rendering it one of the Departments with the largest number of Teaching Fellows in the University. The Faculty is also the host to many internationally distinguished scholars and academic conferences each year.

The Faculty works closely with the legal profession. Its PCLL programme provides the only entry qualification to the legal profession in Hong Kong.

Since its first day, the Faculty has been training graduates who are today distinguished legal professionals and leaders of our community. Building upon our unique position as the only common law jurisdiction in China, capitalizing on the 'one country, two systems' principle, the Faculty has an irreplaceable role to play in scholarship, research and education on common law and comparative law as well as the development of the Rule of Law in China.

University of Hong Kong - Campus Tour

This is NOT a complete tour, it's mostly the route I took from my dorm (Simon KY Lee Hall) and through the main parts of campus. However it should give you a sense of the scenery which is quite nice.

The Department of Law

The Department of Law is responsible for the undergraduate LLB degree course, and for most of the teaching for post-graduate programmes. It also jointly teaches the BBA(Law)/LLB double degree programme with the Faculty of Business and Economics, the BSocSc(Govt&Laws)/LLB double degree programme with the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the BEng (CivE-Law) programme with the Department of Civil Engineering.

The Department has 45 academic staff members who come from different jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, Mainland China, Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and New Zealand. They all carry with them a variety and/or combination of academic and/or professional practice backgrounds and rich international experience.

Among the current teachers are members of the Hong Kong Law Reform Commission or its sub-committees, of committees of the Hong Kong Law Society or Bar, of various Hong Kong government advisory bodies, and people who regularly advise international or foreign bodies, including governments, or local, foreign or international non-governmental organisations.

Our teachers have a wide range of research interests, and are prolific researchers both in Hong Kong and overseas.

Teacher research and other intellectual interests are reflected in the courses they teach and the way they teach them. A number of colleagues have been introducing innovative methods into their teaching. These include courses making use of the Internet.
