University of Huddersfield offering qualifying law degrees recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

The University of Huddersfield is a university in the town of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It has around 20,000 students and is located near the town centre. The Chancellor is the actor Patrick Stewart, who is originally from Mirfield.

The University of Huddersfield has scored highly for student satisfaction in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 National Student Surveys. Huddersfield was also ranked joint first out of all Yorkshire universities for high quality staff and lectures in the Opinion panel Research survey in 2007.

The University of Huddersfield has an international reputation for research in a range of subjects. The University’s Centre for Precision Technologies is widely regarded as the best in the UK and one of the top three in Europe, and the new sonic research lab for music students will be the first of its kind in England. The University is further developing its research and enterprise through significant new investment including the appointment of 20 new Professors.

The Business School

The University of Huddersfield Business School is a long established Business School. We pride ourselves on the dynamic and contemporary range of courses which we offer to support our students to fulfil their career aspirations. These courses are developed in close association with employers and professional bodies to ensure that our students are provided with the knowledge and skills which employers are seeking in the accountancy, business, legal professions, management and marketing disciplines.

About The Law School

From 2008 we offer a radical and innovative new four year degree course combining the traditional law degree with the final stage for qualifying as a solicitor, normally completed through the Legal Practice Course (LPC). At the end of the four years students achieve their LLB(Hons) plus a Master of Law and Practice (‘M Law and Pract’). We are only the second University in the country to be authorised to offer this course by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and this is the first time the SRA has approved such radical reform since 1992. Apart from the added value of obtaining a Master’s degree, students benefit enormously as all fees are deferred until they are in employment.

The School admits around 120 students a year on its full-time LLB/ Master of Law and Practice programmes. Our emphasis is on personal tutor arrangements which means that students get the advantage of close tuition and access to advice and support. According to their choice of options, students can be awarded LLB, LLB Business Law or LLB European Legal Studies. The LLB is also offered on a part-time basis.

There are five joint honours degrees involving Law: BA Law and Accountancy, BA(Hons) Law and Marketing, BA(Hons) Law and Business, BA(Hons) History and Law and BA(Hons) Politics and Law.

Our commitment to ongoing course development to meet the needs of tomorrow’s professionals is demonstrated in new course areas such as the BA(Hons) Law and Criminology degree and a Foundation Degree in Para-Legal Studies which will be available from 2008. This continues Huddersfield’s tradition of being at the forefront of legal education.

In addition, the School offers both full and part-time courses leading to the Common Professional Examination; a range of postgraduate and professional provision, including LLM by open and distance learning or MA in Legal Studies and, supervision for research degrees of MPhil and PhD.

The School also offers the LLB degree programme at the University Centre Oldham (UCO). As well as providing teaching inputs on this course, staff also make substantial contributions to other courses within the Business School and elsewhere in the University.

The School was one of the first new providers to be validated to run the Legal Practice Course from 1993.

Partners In Law

The University of Huddersfield Law School has formed a partnership with a number of legal firms of national and international repute that operate in the Yorkshire region.

The partnership will build closer links between the legal profession and the Law School through activities such as mentoring and guest lectures. This will offer our students excellent, first-hand experience of the profession and help to inform their studies.

The partners will also offering advice on the ways in which the University can help to meet the continuing training needs of the profession.

Experienced staff, excellent facilities

The School has well-qualified, experienced teaching staff. Over half are solicitors or barristers with recent practising experience and more than half have postgraduate degrees. As well as academic rigour we aim to develop practical legal skills to enhance our graduates' employment prospects.

The School has its own Moot Court Room where students can hone their debating skills and engage in mock legal hearings. The University has excellent computer facilities and the library, computer centre and University of Huddersfield Law School are all close together on the attractive town centre campus.

The Baroness Hale Law Society

The Society is an active student organisation which arranges a host of academic and social activities usually culminating in an Annual Ball.
