Courses: Law Medical Law Postgraduate Diploma/LLM Distance Learning PG Diploma 18 months, LLM 2 years The programme enables participants to gain specialist knowledge within a practical context whilst enhancing research skills and developing expertise in a chosen field. The programme will be of interest to practising lawyers, doctors, other health care professionals, administrators and those with a general interest in Medical Law. Mental Health Law Policy and Practice Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/LLM Distance Learning PG Certificate 9 months, PG Diploma 18 months, LLM 2 years The LLM in Mental Health Law, Policy and Practice has been written and developed in close consultation with the Institute of Mental Health Act Practitioners (IMHAP) with the aim of providing in-depth training to IMHAP members and those who specifically work within the field of mental health administration. This innovative programme provides a unique opportunity for administrators, social workers, hospital nursing staff and other health care personnel who are involved in the field of mental health to gain either a Diploma or Masters degree whilst still pursuing their careers. Commercial Law Postgraduate Diploma/LLM Full Time 1 year full-time The LLM/Diploma in Commercial Law is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of a range of commercial law subjects and as such the programme will interest students who wish to enhance their qualifications in this dynamic area. It will also be of interest to anybody running their own business or employed in a commercial organisation. Graduate Diploma in Law / Common Professional Examination GDL/CPE Graduate Diploma Full Time 1 year full-time The Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination provides the academic stage of legal education for non-law graduates who intend to become solicitors or barristers. On successful completion of this course students are then qualified to proceed to the vocational stage of training, the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course, both of which are also available at Northumbria. International Trade Law Postgraduate Diploma/LLM Full Time 1 year This postgraduate programme provides students with an in-depth understanding of the legal issues involved in international trade and will provide students with a reputable qualification in this exciting area of study. This combined degree places crime in its social context and uses sociological analysis to help us understand and analyse crime and criminals and what we do about them. Students are encouraged to think about the changing nature of society and research methods, the nature and dimensions of inequality and global issues in the contemporary world. Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination (GDL/CPE) Graduate Diploma Distance Learning 2 years distance learning The Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination provides the academic stage of legal education for non-law graduates who intend to become solicitors or barristers. On successful completion of this course students are then qualified to proceed to the vocational stage of training, the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course, both of which are also available at Northumbria. Legal Practice Course (LPC) Part Time 2 years This programme satisfies the Law Society's requirement for those wishing to enter into a training contract to qualify as a solicitor. The programme includes a large amount of substantive law as well as providing training in the skills of drafting, advocacy, research and interviewing. This programme is an integral part of the vocational training of intended solicitors. It aims to prepare students for entry into a training contract with a solicitor. Legal Practice Course (LPC) Full Time 1 year The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is the required training for all students who wish to qualify as solicitors. The programme provides vocational training across a range of subjects and practical skills, enabling students to learn how to apply their legal knowledge in a practical context. In April 2007, the LPC at Northumbria was awarded the highest possible rating in all areas of assessment by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. LLB (Hons) LLB (Hons) Part Time 4 to 6 years Designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. This route provides students with a qualifying degree that gives exemption from the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister. LLB (Hons) / LLB (Hons) Solicitors Exempting / LLB (Hons) Barristers Exempting LLB (Hons) Full Time 3 years or 4 years full-time This course offers the choice of studying for three years to obtain an LLB (Hons) qualifying degree or four years to achieve either a Solicitors Exempting degree or an Exempting Bar Vocational award. The course builds on the School of Law's reputation for innovative teaching, in particular on its philosophy of combining academic development with practice experience. Students are given the opportunity to advise real clients in the School's Student Law Office gaining hands-on experience and the skills required in an increasingly competitive environment. LLB (Hons) Open Learning LLB (Hons) Distance Learning 4 to 6 years This course is designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. This open learning degree is ideal for those students who are unable to attend the institution regularly for tuition. LLB CPE Conversion Distance Learning One year Students successfully completing the GDL/CPE Programme are eligible to convert their Diploma to an LLB Honours Degree. This one year Conversion Programme comprises the study of two additional legal subjects and the submission of a project of 10,000-15,000 words on a legal area chosen by the student.
