About the School of Social Sciences and Law

The School of Social Sciences and Law has several hundred full-time and part-time students taking taught master’s programmes, together with 60 research students studying for MPhil or PhD degrees. In addition to those from the European Union member states, there are students from 40 different countries around the world.

Over 50 staff throughout the School are actively engaged in high quality, innovative research. In the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise, Anthropology, Law and Sociology received a 4 (out of 5*) rating. Members of the Geography Department contributed to the History Department's 5* rating and to the 4 achieved by the Department of Planning.

Research community

As a research student you will be offered extensive support and you will benefit from interdisciplinary seminars and conferences held at the University. You will also complete a research methods course, which is supplemented by advanced training tailored to the requirements of particular research topics.

Many of our research and consultancy projects involve collaboration across the School, the University, and at universities and organisations in the UK and abroad. We have strong connections with several nearby institutions, including the John Radcliffe Hospital, the University of Oxford and Oxford City Council.

  • The Anthropology Centre for Conservation, Environment and Development

Funding

Students are encouraged to apply for Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding or Oxford Brookes University studentships. In past years CASE studentships have been held in sociology and social policy. ESRC 1+3 and/or +3 recognition is held by Anthropology, Politics, Psychology and Sociology.

Funding has been received from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the research councils, charitable trusts, local authorities, government departments and commercial companies.

Facilities

The University boasts excellent facilities for study. Research students are provided with computer workstations in the new Buckley research building. Students studying Primate Conservation have access to a specialist sound laboratory for acoustical analyses of primate vocalisations and primate taxonomy. Students in the Psychology Department can make use of a dedicated postgraduate laboratory and specialist laboratories for visual neuropsychology and child observation. Microscope and thin-section analysis facilities are available to Anthropology and Geography students.

Professional accreditation

Research

Over 70 staff throughout the School are actively engaged in high quality, innovative research. In the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Anthropology, Law and Sociology received a 4 (out of 5*) rating. Members of the Geography Department contributed to the History Department’s 5* rating and to the 4 achieved by the Department of Planning. Following considerable investment in staffing and facilities, all these disciplines are on course to be rated even higher in RAE 2008.

The Department of Law

The Law Department is located in Headington Hall, set in beautiful gardens just a five-minute walk from the main Gipsy Lane site. The Law Department has a long record of excellence and innovation in teaching, and has invested heavily in the development of a student-centred ethos. This includes regular student evaluation of the teaching, which helps to shape future practice.
