University of Sheffield offering qualifying law degrees recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

The University of Sheffield is a leading research university, located in Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. Ranked within the World's top 100 Universities and constantly ranked amongst the top 20 universities in Britain, it is one of the original 'red brick' universities and a member of the Russell Group.

Like most British universities, the University of Sheffield is headed by a Vice-Chancellor. Professor Keith Burnett, CBE, is the current Vice-Chancellor, and he took over from Prof. Bob Boucher, CBE on 1 October 2007. There is also a titular Chancellor, Sir Peter Middleton. Professor Burnett was Head of the Division of Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences at the University of Oxford and, before that, the Chairman of Physics.

The University is in the process of changing its structure, from the existing seven faculties into five new faculties:

Research

Research is at the heart of the School's mission and takes in all areas of legal, socio-legal and criminological scholarship, but with an emphasis on the study of law and criminology in their social, business, international and scientific contexts.

The School's research has been rated as being of international quality in the last 3 Research Assessment Exercises. In the most recent assessment (2008) 85% of our research was rated as International Quality, 15% of which was world leading.

About the Law School

Bartolome House, the new Law School

Location

Just a minute´s walk away from Western Bank, the University of Sheffield´s main campus, is Bartolome House on Winter Street. Built at the beginning of the 1900s, Bartolome House is an impressive red-brick building forming three sides of a square, with graceful arches, gargoyles and decorative wrought-ironwork. It´s a distinctive building with real character. The old and the new - once inside you find all the modern facilities you would expect of a top law school. We have excellent IT facilities, seminar rooms, student common rooms and our own courtroom so students can practise their advocacy skills in a realistic setting.

Research

Research is at the heart of the Law School's mission and underpins all of the School's academic activity, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The School of Law has a vibrant research culture. Our academic staff are nationally and internationally renowned.

The School's research covers a range of approaches and methods, including not only doctrinal research but also socio-legal, comparative, empirical and interdisciplinary research, individually and collectively.

Apart from their academic publishing, many have been involved in informing policy processes through its research and advisory work for government departments, public agencies and regional, national and international bodies. We attract significant amounts of research funding and were rated as a 5 department in the last Research Assessment Exercise (2001).

Overall, our objective is to develop and sustain a vigorous and vibrant research culture, which values, fosters and supports all forms of research.

School's research is organised around five research clusters:

Sheffield University Centre for Criminological Research
The Centre for the Study of Law in its International Context
The Centre for the Study of Law in Society
The Institute for Commercial Law Studies
Sheffield Institute for Biotechnological Law and Ethics

Each of the clusters stimulate research by providing a forum within which ideas can be disseminated and discussed. All academic staff, research staff and postgraduate students are members of one or more research clusters, which play a central role in the School´s research culture and strategy, each of which organises its own programme of seminars.

Links with the Legal Profession

We have links with all aspects of the legal profession, from large London firms of lawyers, to medium sized regional solicitors´ firms. We have links with judges and also with barristers from the local Bar or from large chambers. Ad hoc lectures and seminars are often given to our students by members of the legal profession who may sponsor facilities or donate prizes for outstanding achievement.
