Default UK law degrees: London South Bank University

London South Bank University offering qualifying law degrees recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

London South Bank University (LSBU) is one of the oldest universities in central London with over 23,000 students and 1,700 staff based in the London Borough of Southwark. The Chancellor is the newscaster Sir Trevor McDonald and the Vice-Chancellor is the historian Professor Deian Hopkin.

The university has four faculties covering Health and Social Care (HSC); Business and Computing (BCIM); Arts and Human Sciences (AHS) and Engineering, Science and Built Environment (ESBE). Many courses hold national accreditation. It hosts the oldest bakery school in the world, the National Bakery School, founded in 1894.

Its most celebrated teacher was the British painter David Bomberg (1890-1957), now recognised as one of the greatest British artists of the last century, who taught painting and drawing part-time at the Borough Polytechnic between 1945 and 1954 and took part in exhibitions with his students organised in the Borough Group (1946-51) and the Borough Bottega (1953-55). Major paintings by Bomberg were acquired by the Tate Gallery only after his death. The University's hall of residence, David Bomberg House, carries his name.

According to the Sunday Times' recent guide to UK universities (2008), South Bank is the 6th highest in the UK for graduate starting salaries. In the recent HEFCE UK research rankings, the university ranked 68th out of 132 colleges, for the quality of its research efforts.

London South Bank University - become what you want to be

Law Department at London South Bank University

Quote:
There has never been a better time to study law at LSBU. In 2005/06 we celebrated 30 years of our LLB programme, LSBU was ranked 8th in the country for graduate starting salaries and our most famous graduate, Bridget Prentice, MP for Lewisham East, was appointed Minster for Legal Aid at the Department of Constitutional Affairs.

As well as offering an excellent legal education, the Law Department aims to be a Community Law School - encouraging students in local schools to aspire to higher education, training the local lawyers who provide access to justice for all and supporting our students to fulfil their ambitions to succeed in
their chosen careers.

Taking advantage of our central location and excellent, modern facilities, the Law Department has developed a thriving relationship with the local legal profession, appointing leading lawyers as visiting professors and lecturers, hosting continuing professional development training seminars for local solicitors and encouraging our many successful alumni to give careers advice and offer work placements to our current students.

LSBU attracts students from all around the world and from all walks of life. The diversity of our students’ backgrounds make our law courses an exciting and stimulating place to study, as well as making the Law Department one of the most diverse Departments in one of the most diverse Universities in the country.

So it doesn't matter who you are, if you have the potential to succeed, we have the courses, the staff, the skills, the experience and the vision to enable you to realise your potential.

Become what you want to be !

Andy Unger,

Head of the Law Department

Taking Charge of Your Career

Careers and Employment Opportunities

London South Bank University prizes its links with the local practising community and has gone to great lengths to preserve and develop such links further. The University is a host for Continuing Professional Development Lectures, inviting guest speakers and practitioners to deliver lectures on live issues within the law. The students of the University are invited to attend such events providing a gateway for making contacts and gaining inspiration from qualified personnel within the profession. A series of career lectures are delivered on potential careers for graduating law students; these are delivered by practitioners in the profession alongside the University’s dedicated careers department. The profile of the students and the University is promoted throughout the year via such talks, national mooting competitions and now the development of a ‘placement’ scheme due to be piloted for the first time in February 2006. We appreciate how competitive the graduate job market is and we make every effort to enhance the employability of our students, not just with the delivery of the core subjects of a qualifying law degree, but going further in assisting students with practical skill and knowledge that every employer seeks regardless of the career option.
