Default UK law degrees: University of Surrey

University of Surrey offering qualifying law degrees recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

The University of Surrey is a university located within the county town of Guildford, Surrey in the South East of England. It received its charter on 9 September 1966, and was previously situated near Battersea Park in south-west London. The institution was known as Battersea College of Technology before gaining university status. Its roots however go back to the Battersea Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1891 to provide further and higher education for London's poorer inhabitants.

The university is a member of the 1994 Group. The university conducts extensive research on small satellites and has a high number of staff who are members of learned societies. The Research Assessment Exercise 2001 awarded nine departments at the university 5 or 5* ratings. The university has recently expanded into China by launching the Surrey International Institute with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics.

The university's main campus is located on Stag Hill close to the centre of Guildford and adjacent to Guildford Cathedral. A second campus, at Manor Park, is located a short distance away and has been developed to expand upon existing accommodation, academic buildings and sporting facilities.

Law has been a part of the University's portfolio almost since its foundation, with Law and Language combined programmes dating from the 1960s. Over recent years legal education at Surrey has undergone rapid expansion with undergraduate programmes in Law with International Studies and single honours Law now also being offered, as well as a range of postgraduate programmes and research opportunities. In recognition of this, as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the University, Law at Surrey became a School of Law in 2007.

The Single Honours Law programme is now one of the biggest undergraduate courses run by the University and attracts students from around the world and from all walks of life in the UK. We are also particularly proud of the extensive provision of work placement opportunities for our students. This is part of our ethos, which is to combine demanding and rewarding academic study with exposure to the realities of the professional world.

We are also proud of our international and European traditions. Not only do we continue to offer undergraduate Law that combines with the study of international or European legal systems and languages but we now offer Masters programmes focussing on these areas. We send many of our undergraduate students on placements both within Europe and to North America. We also have regular exchange programmes with a variety of European universities.

The School is not just about teaching. We have a broad range of research activity, ranging from areas of international and European law to concepts like Environmental and Environmental Health Law, Justice, Family Law, and aspects of Public Law. Our growing body of postgraduate research students are working on a range of projects cutting across all of these areas.
