Some states have limits and some do not.
You can always call your state Bar to check as well.

That's really high. I live in Canada and the contingency fee is usually between 25-33%. But if she already signed there's not much she can do about it. Lawyers usually lay out the fees right from the beginning, so it's strange if that never came up.

Above 40 or 50% is very unusual.
And prohibited in some states.

I agree check with the State Bar,

That is pretty high BTW even if it is legal. I suggest you look around a bit or negotiate that fee down.

If you agree to it in a contract yes! However, if the State where you sign the contract has usury laws that cap commissions and fees, your contract can get legally reviewed and voided as an illegal contract and then you probably just owe the maximum allowed in that state.
