I wish to inform you that rent increase depends upon laws of your state and your lease agreement. If your lease agreement is silent then generally rent can be increased only after consent of both the parties. In this regard rent increase is modification of existing term and condition and therefore require consent of both the parties. Landlord himself cannot change rent amount and enforce such amended agreement on tenant.

Unless you live in a rent-controlled jurisdiction, there may not be any limit to which the LL can raise your rent. In some states, including California where I live, we do have rent-control ordinance applied to specific cities, but where they do not apply, the rent can be raised to any level the LL chooses. The difference, however, is that if the rent increase is equal to or higher than a certain percentage of the original rent amount, the NOTICE period for informing the tenant and effective date of the higher rent increase is longer than if it was a smaller increase.
