You will lose your deposit and any reasonable expense to rent it again in most cases.

You can be charged reasonable expenses to re-rent. After that frankly there's really very little the landlord can do since you are abroad.

I kind of have the similar problem like her. I still have 6 months left on my lease, but the reason that I have to leave is that my I-20 has already expired because I just graduated this December. I do have to leave by the end of this month or otherwise, it will be illegal for me to keep staying in the U.S. I can't really afford to pay off nearly $5000 worth of remaining rent, and I've spent months to looking for a new tenant, I even offered to pay a portion of the rent to them so that they can rent the place for a lower price. But unfortunately, no one is interested. And I don't know what to do.
