Default Accessing deceased relative's gmail email account

My uncle passed away and we would like to get his gmail account and all emails and attachments, as it contains critical family information that that he was working on.
He was researching issues for two years but he never gave anybody the passwords etc.
Is there any way to get that information? or is it lost forever now?

As per google policy you will not get the password of a deceased persons gmail account. But you have the option to request necessary and relevant data from a deceased persons account. After thorough review of the request regarding its trustworthiness you will get necessary information.

Have you tried just clicking on the gmail icon on his computer?

If that doesn't do it, somebody will have to open probate and be appointed representative of his estate by the court.

Even if information is available from google (as suggested by Lexus) google won't give anybody the time of day without those court papers.
