My boss called my "a stupid *****" in front of 6 other employees?

I think that is unacceptable aid may be illegal. I am furious.

Is there any legal action I can take?

You can find another job. Unless you are covered by a contract or CBA that specifically prohibits it your boss can express his opinion of you or your work product.

You have no damages and it’s not a crime.

Try to discuss the problem in a professional way. You should explain that the situation is having a negative effect. You should document what has occurred and who has witnessed it. If the company handbook includes an internal grievance system, harassment policy, anti-violence policy, code of conduct or ethics hotline, employees should follow the procedures outlined in these policies. Bring the problem to HR if the attempt to talk over the situation with the verbal abuse doesn’t help. If you are not adequately aided at the company level, you may hire an attorney to take your case to court

Was it a one time thing, in the heat of the moment, or does your boss routinely treat you like crap.

If the latter, you would be wise to seek employment elsewhere.

However, depending on the circumstances it might rise to illegal harassment or hostile work environment.

Report it to HR or his boss.

If that is not possible you may want to just let it go and if it happens again file a complaint at your nearest Dept of Labor. Even if it does not go far, he will be on notice.

And he certainly will not want multiple complaints.
