Default Auto insurance in NY or NJ?

Is it legal to insure my car in New Jersey if I live in both NY and NJ about equally but I file all of my taxes in NY?
Thanks!

Ask your auto insurance agent.

Not enough information for me to give any opinion.

Like:

Why do you file your taxes in NY instead of NJ?
Where do you get most of your mail?
Where do you work?
What address does your employer have on record for you.
How much time do you spend in each home?
Where's your car when you are at work?
Where are your doctors?
Where are you covered for medical insurance?

Answer all the questions one by one.

If your car must be registered in New York then it has to be insured there. Chances are if you pay taxes exclusively in New York you are a resident of New York and must have a New York license and registration.

It is always good to have your car registration and insurance in same state where you have permanent address to avoid difficulties when a claim is occurred.

You normally need to buy the coverage where you and the car really are based.
You can't just buy where it may b cheaper.
Sounds like it is NY from you say.
