Total fees and costs in a small claims court action
What are the total costs really when filing in small claims court in New York?
I see the filing fees but are there any hidden costs or unexpected costs as well? I can't really afford more than a couple of hundred dollars to pursue this matter of mine. Thank you! |

You'll have process service fees in addition to filing fees.
Call several process servers and get rates based on where your defendant is located. |

Call the court and ask about service. I'm not sure a process server is necessary. My mother was sued in small claims a few years ago and I'm pretty sure she was served by mail.

There is no hidden or unexpected costs in filing with small claims court. The fee is payable at the time of filing the case.
