Default FDA approved a drug

Does the fact the FDA approved a drug mean that you cannot sue for it being defective and dangerous?
That's what my doctor seems to be saying to me.
But there is no absolute rule on that is there?

Watch afternoon TV. It’s all advertising for lawsuits filed against mfr of drugs and devices that were FDA approved.

In fact if you take something not approved you’re on your own more or less.

It’s typically not the prescribing doctor you’d sue but rather the mfr.
