Default Canceling an auto insurance policy because you hit three deer

Michigan

Is it legal for an insurer to cancel your auto policy because you had three accidents by hitting three deer in 18 months?

It's not my fault.
It seems to me like it should be illegal.

Nothing illegal about it.

Make a complaint to DIFS if you feel you've been wronged, but it probably will not get you anywhere.

Perfectly legal.

Your policy was more likely non-renewed than cancelled. There is a big difference in the law between the two.

Non-renewal happens when your policy comes up for renewal and the company doesn't want to renew because of claims. The law is rather liberal on that.

Cancellation happens during the policy term and insurance companies are allowed to do that for only strictly limited reasons, generally not for claims though.

Insurers deal in risks, and being able to assess risk and avoid losses is part of how they survive as a business. Unfortunately, people have situations and circumstances that often fit outside the norm; your insurance company may cancel you for non-payment, or insurance companies may find a situation too risky and decide to cancel your policy. Too many claims could be a reason for cancelling your policy. You have to put forth a strong argument to get an insurance company to continue to insure you if you have a claims frequency. Make your own analysis of your situation by answering questions such as: How much was each claim worth?, What was the nature of each claim?, Were they related?, Has anything changed that makes you “less risky”?

It may not be your fault but perhaps you are not a good defensive driver.
If you know deer are active in the area, slow way down.
