Default AAA arbitrations for consumers

What is the difference between a desk arbitration and an arbitration on the documents?

And if you do an arbitration just on the documents (ie no in-person hearing or telephonic hearing) can an arbitrator override both parties and call an in person hearing anyway?

Default Re: AAA arbitrations for consumers

I wish to inform you that in a Desk Arbitration, the parties submit their arguments and evidence to the arbitrator in writing. The arbitrator then makes an award based only on the documents. No hearing is held. Where no claims or counterclaims exceed $10,000, the dispute shall be resolved by the submission of documents. Any party, however, may ask for a hearing. The arbitrator may also decide that a hearing is necessary. The arbitrator will establish a fair process for submitting the documents. Documents must be sent to the AAA. These will be forwarded to the arbitrator.
