What could be the best way to make him pay back?

Hello! Wanted to get your advice: me and my boyfriend have a start up, and based on our friends recommendation we started working with a social media consultant. We paid him 6000$ and sent two prototypes of our products for photoshoots that never happened. In the end, as he didn’t do almost any work, he, in an email, promised to return the products and pay back 5000$ but then disappeared. What could be the best way to make him pay back? We are located in the UK, he - in the US. We don’t know his current address but know where he used to live at the time when we started working together - his parents house.

    There is no best way.

You sue him if you can find him. Lawsuits have to be served personally on him so knowing his parents' location doesn't help you. You and your boyfriend will have to travel to the US to testify in court. Travel expense and time off from work are not compensable.

Even if you went through all that and got a judgment, the judgment might not be worth the paper it's printed on if he is a young unemployed scammer.

I wish to inform you that you may file a complaint with IC3 online (Federal Bureau of Investigation - Internet Crime Complaint Center). IC3 will investigate the matter.

File a police report for fraud where he lives, he likely scammed others.
Taking money and not provided any services is a crime and many are in prison for it in the USA.

Also file with the state Attorney General. They will investigate too and help resolve.

Both will help you resolve it.

You can still also file in small claims court. And that is sometimes the fastest, if you can find him and serve him.
