Default Clarificatio on Not-for-Profit Daycare Agency in Mississauga, ON

Hi there!

I am leaning towards forming a Not-for-Profit (in opposed to Profit) Daycare Agency in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. I would like to know the following:

1. Can not-for-profits generate "any" profit, and if so, can they use their profit to go towards "re-investing" in the business - i.e. purchasing real estate for offices, donating to other charities, having some reserve to plan for the future, etc?

2. How do we set the salary/compensation for founding members/operators and any other workers - i.e. home visitors, admin staff, homecare providers?

3. Are not-for-profits only able to apply for grants - i.e. can for-profit agencies also apply?

4. Are there any zoning issues (not-for-profit or profit) for office space for 3 people (2 founding members and a home visitor) working out of a space of 150-170 square feet in the downtown Mississauga area?

Thanking you in advance.

I wish to inform you that not for profit entity can earn surplus which can be invested in business. As the intention is not to earn profit hence any income in excess of expense can be regarded as surplus which can be used for purposes of business. Salary can be paid by non profit to its employees including its founding members. Grants are available for not for profit. Grants are given by agencies for various purposes and this may include your not for profit activities. Lastly zoning issues does not discriminate between for profit or not for profit. In this at places where other are free to open day care at that place you can also open day care.

To ensure the best possible child care at affordable prices, the federal and provincial governments of Canada provide grants to licensed, nonprofit child-care centers and homes across the country. These grants are provided to help with the costs of renovations and reparations, special-needs equipment and employee salaries and training.
